Nearly as large as the compact Tiguan, the Taos is an attractive new entry point for VW's crossover lineup. As the Taos is one of the larger players in its class. Its MQB-based architecture rests atop a wheelbase of either 105.6 inches for the all-wheel-drive variant or 105.9 inches for the front-driver. It has a huge back seat for a subcompact SUV, and its capacious and easily accessible cargo hold can swallow 25 cubic feet of stuff behind the rear seats (28 cubes if you forgo all-wheel drive). On the road, if you don't know to look for its distinguishing design cues, a broad LED light bar that connects the standard LED headlights plus chrome TAOS lettering on the rear liftgate, you can easily mistake it for a (slightly) larger Tiguan. VW says the name Taos refers to the rugged, picturesque town in New Mexico. We didn't go there for our drive, but we did traverse our local Michigan haunts in front-drive and all-wheel-drive variants, both top SEL trim levels. Volkswagen's smallest SUV is a big deal. The 2022 Taos packs plenty of modern tech and safety features into a tidy package. It also has excellent passenger and cargo space. With the all-new 2022 Volkswagen Taos, VW is filling out its SUV lineup with a new entry-level model that provides more style, interior room and driving satisfaction than many rivals. The Taos is impressive from the moment you sit inside. All Taos models come standard with a digital instrument cluster that can be customized to display anything from the song that's playing to turn-by-turn directions, whether from the navigation system or from your phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone integration. There's also some nice-looking materials, roomy seating and lots of cargo space for a little SUV. Overall, we think Volkswagen has a compelling SUV on its hands. The Taos offers comparable sophistication and not much of a trade-off in cargo space compared to its Tiguan stablemate. How does the Taos drive? We were surprised to find the Taos, one of the larger SUVs in this diminutive class, is also one of the quickest. The Taos handles around corners quite impressively as well, with well-controlled body roll and accurate steering. How's the interior? The interior is one of the best in the class, from the ease in which you can step in and out of the large door openings to the generous passenger space. In a segment in which passenger and cargo space is in short supply, the Taos seems to have an abundance.

Should have been a 4-1/2 star overall vehicle
By Farmer | on Sunday, October 09, 2022
I owned this SE 4Motion Taos since December 2021. The only attribute keeping this vehicle from being great is the sloppy transmission. The transmission shifts inconsistently causing either jerking of vehicle at low speeds or inadequate acceleration when needed to merge into traffic. These are big safety issues requiring an immediate fix. There are two things you can do to minimize those conditions. Use gasoline rated at 89 octane and customize the normal driving mode by setting the driveline to ECO. This will lessen the occurrence of jerking and hesitation. I have had a full day of the vehicle operating like it should on occasion for unknown reasons.… - 1.0
So many problem
By Firstnewcar | on Thursday, August 18, 2022
At first I absolutely loved my Taos. I did so much research for my first new car and had saved up so much. Once my car hit 10,000 it started having issues where this EPC light came on and the check engine light. I put the correct gas in the tank as it says 87 or 91. And they came back and said it was ‘bad gas’ and it’s not covered under warranty and vw isn’t coming out and owning the problem. The engine starts stalling, and when it does finally pick up its a huge jolt. I’m getting car sick just driving it to the grocery store. They said that this problem is happening to so many of the Taos models around the US and many Jetta’s as well. They told me I could pay $700 to drain my fuel tank and it ~might~ fix the problem. I haven’t even had my car a year. It’s the 2022 vw Taos SEL AWD. I have almost been hit 3 times now at 4 way stops because my car won’t get up and go and when it finally does it almost makes you hit something because it’s a huge jolt of power.… - 5.0
Great vehicle!
By Elderly driver | on Sunday, October 20, 2024
Great mileage: 33mpg with my driving. The height is just right for me. I can sit down in it without falling or climbing into the seat and get out without jumping to the ground. Built in a Jetta frame, it's the perfect size for me. It's the quality I expect from VW. Smooth transition from gear to gear as it accelerates. The ACC is quick to recognize vehicles as it approaches them and adjust speed without running up too close.…
